A bird in the hand

 
                    Everything’s falling. At least, that’s how it seemed to
April. Without Sandy’s tutoring, her grades were falling. After the last
three strike-outs, her batting average was falling too. The only thing
good that was falling was Sandy’s sadness. It had fallen away today like
sheets of rain at the end of a storm.

     “These books weren’t there before. They suddenly appeared on
my night table . . . like magic,” Sandy said. She hoisted her book bag
by one strap and tried to make herself more comfortable with the load
as she walked.

     April stiffened visibly. This was the same line of talk Sandy had
subjected her to at lunch, but she was able to escape when the class bell
rang. Finally, she’s stopped being so depressed thought April.

     When April had seen her friend in class or the hallways Sandy had
been uncharacteristically quiet. Now, she was starting to act like her
old self again. She’d even given April some new stories she’d written.
This was a very good sign.

     It’s too bad that she’s still writing in those odd tense changes, thought
April. You know, my Aunt Melissa used to do the same thing. She’d
always be telling me strange things about it too. Magic is very present,
Aunt Melissa would tell me. April shook her head. Aunt Melissa had
