| Sandra effectively avoided April
all morning long. They had a mid-morning algebra class in common.
Sandy was a grade behind April, but she was in the Advanced Math
Program. Sandy often tutored algebra to April after school.
Today, she grunted when April said hello and kept her gaze focused on her
math book. April sat down kitty-cornered and one row in front of
Sandy and endured the class. Sandy couldn't dodge april at lunch.
They had a standing lunch date for the last three years. They ate
in silence for awhile. Sandy broke the ice.
"It really happened didn't it,"
Sandy said.
"Yes, it did," April replied.
"At first, I thought it was a dream, but it really happened." They
sat in silence a little longer. April's cafeteria food was up to
its usual standard of blandness. Sandra had wisely brought a lunch.
"It was a good thing,"
Sandy said around a bite of cucumber sandwich.
"Yes, it was a good thing,"
April said. She stirred her food absentimindedly and appeared to
be having a revelation; as if realizing that it was a good thing
for the first time. “Sandy, You still have those scrap
books.”
“Yea, of course.
Why,” Sandy asked?
“Well, can I come over tonight
and look at them,” April wondered?
“Sure, and don’t forget to bring
your algebra book. I’ve seen your last test,” Sandy said.
Both girls laughed. It was the first time the ice had been broken
all day. The rest of the school day flowed smoothly for April.
Later, after dinner she hiked over to Sandy’s. The sky looked a little
threatening. April’s Mom told her to call if it started to rain;
she’d give her daughter a ride home. April knew from experience that
Sandy’s Mom would beat her to it.
