| “I had a run-in with Courtney
and her oaf of a boyfriend today,” April said.
“Yea, I heard. Thanks
for sticking up for Amanda. I don’t know what Courtney has against
her,” Sandy said.
“Well, sticking up for
her nearly got me flattened,” April replied. She opened the poetry
book. The first page automatically fell opened. April stared
in astonishment.
“It’s the poem we recited yesterday,”
Sandy offered. “Although, I don’t understand why it worked,
especially since we didn’t have anyone named Maeve.” April looked
at Sandy and turned beet red. “What,” Sandy asked? Her friend’s
scarlet color caught her off guard.
"It's my middle name,"
April replied. She felt very foolish. April's middle name was
something that she didn't like and felt embarrassed sharing this with her
friend.
"You lied to me. You told
me your middle name was Melissa, like your Aunt," Sandy said.
She was in shock. Except for the soft patter of rain on the rood
and window, there was no sound for a minute or two.
"Well it's not a cool name. I hate it. It doesn't roll off of your tongue," April said. "Hmmm....April...Maeve. Sounds like April, May," Sandy said. "June...July," April continued. Both girls laughed. "Are you girls doing your homework, or are you fooling around," Sandy's Mom yelled up the stairway. "All done Mom. Just hanging
out," Sandy yelled back.
