Confrontation |
|
“Ow!” Sandy moaned when her hand touched
her eye. The
older nurse sent the young one out for an ice pack. The nurse
and April eased Sandy into a chair and the nurse began to look at Sandy’s
eye. The nursing supervisor shot a cautious look at April. She assumed
April had punched Sandy. The whole situation was confusing. There was a
girl, who was not a patient, sleeping in a visitor’s chair in her pajamas,
and who now had a rapidly blackening eye.
Prima was standing next to her daughter. She took April’s left arm and examined it. “It’s Ok”, she said surprised. “What’s OK?” the supervisor asked. She was not aware of the specifics of April’s case. “She's fully conscious and she can move her arm again,” Prima said. April sheepishly pulled her arm free from her mother’s grasp. She was embarrassed at what cost her arm had been cured. The young nurse came back with an ice pack. The supervisor gently applied the ice pack to the rapidly puffing eye. “Hold this here,” she instructed Sandy as she placed Sandy’s hand over the ice pack. Prima went to the phone to call her husband about April’s recovery. Then she called Karen. “OK, what happened in here?” the older nurse asked Sandy. She didn’t respond.
