What Happened?, continued |
| For now, April could do nothing. In April’s peripheral
vision, Mandy was still in view. Mandy curled up in a tight ball on the
floor, still in the same spot that Courtney had hip-checked her. She’s
probably all right and more afraid and shocked than hurt, thought April.
I can’t believe I’m checking on Mandy, when Courtney and her gooney boyfriend
are going to pound me flat.
Mr. Sorenson was on his way to the copy machines. He passed by the hallway that Courtney and her entourage, were occupying. Did I see what I thought I saw? Mr. Sorenson quickly turned around and headed back. “All right Brock, release the girl,” commanded Mr. Sorenson. Mr. Sorenson taught math but also broke up more than his fair share of hallway fights. Standing an impressive six feet, four inches tall and built like a wall of muscle, he made football captain Brock look like a tooth-pick next to a two-by-four. Mr. Sorenson rapidly caught up to Brock and the pinned April. Courtney’s gang backed off into a semi-circle around Brock, April, and the teacher. Courtney continued that annoying hair twirling as she smirked at April, from around Mr. Sorenson’s right side. Mandy’s prone form was hidden from the teacher by the circular screen of thugs. Mr. Sorenson glowered down at Brock. Brock, low on brains and high on testosterone, glowered back up at the teacher. Mr. Sorenson held up a cell phone. “Since your last stunt, Brock, I’ve put the Police on speed dial. Would you like to discuss this with the Principal or would you rather make it assault and battery.” “You saw nothin,” Brock growled. “Just like last time.” Brock flashed an irritating grin at Mr. Sorenson, and let go of April without a second look. Mr. Sorenson remembered the last time. He caught Brock dead to rights and the student assaulted was originally willing to testify, but Courtney’s lawyers were good, real good. The football coach also helped, convincing Brock’s victim that it was all a misunderstanding. The school did not lose their star quarterback, but Mr. Sorenson was left looking like a fool. Brock tried to walk away, but Mr. Sorenson grabbed one of his biceps. He tried to tear his arm away from the teacher.
