What Happened?, continued

Courtney’s mom; now there was a real pain in the neck, thought April. She was part of the Nouveau Riche (new money) class and had bought or schmoozed her way into a couple of Newport society organizations.
April could never figure out why a rich kid like Courtney, would go to a public school, unless she’d been kicked out of every private high school in New England. Knowing Courtney, this seemed likely to April.
Courtney was gliding down the hallway with her entourage of thugs; she called her friends. Actually, she inherited this vicious mob when she began to date Brock Thorton. They ‘re really his friends; the less reputable members of Brock’s football team and their girlfriends. Now, they’re Courtney’s to do with as she pleases. Courtney ‘s a natural leader and even the dull-witted Brock never noticed her effortless assumption of his leadership role.
As she passed Mandy Faith Prescott, a classmate of April’s, Courtney intentionally hip-checked Mandy into the lockers. Mandy hit the lockers in shock. It’s tough for trusting Mandy to believe that anyone could be cruel for no reason. It wouldn’t matter if she stood up for herself anyway; this gang has her badly outnumbered. Courtney’s gooney boyfriend, Brock, laughed.
April’s blood boiled. Mandy had never done anything to Courtney. Courtney was still looking back at Mandy and never saw April’s foot. Courtney goes down hard.
April was fast. Brock was faster. Brock dropped Courtney’s books (He wasn’t smart enough to carry and use his own) and pinned April to the lockers.
Courtney got up and casually dusted herself off. With April trapped helplessly by Courtney’s muscle-bound boyfriend, she could afford to take her time getting up. Courtney sauntered over to April. Twirling a lock of raven-black hair, she began to torment April.
“Well, well what do we have here. Getting cocky aren’t we Wiley,” said Courtney as she coyly paced in front of the pinned April. “Getting to be quite the little Hero.”
April felt out of breath. Brock was literally squeezing the blood out of both of her arms. If Courtney came into range she would spit on her.
